John Desmond Peter was born in South Africa. He studied law and English literature at Oxford and later at Rhodes University and the University of South Africa, obtaining his Ph.D. from Rhodes. He published his doctoral thesis as "Complaint and Satire in Early English Literature". Peter came to Canada in 1950 and for 11 years taught English at the University of Manitoba. George Cuomo was born in New York City. He received a BA from Tufts University in 1952 and an MA from Indiana University in 1955. He taught English at the University of Arizona, Tucson from 1956-61, at Victoria College/University of Victoria from 1961 to 1965, from 1965 to 1973 at California State College at Hayward, California and from 1973 at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
